Myth Debunked: Is CrossFit Dangerous?

By: CrossFit Fortify
Many people who are looking to get started with a new workout regimen have heard of CrossFit. Unfortunately, they also may have heard deceptive rumors claiming that CrossFit injuries are more common than injuries in other training programs. With dishonest reporting and uninformed reviews circulating, both current and potential CrossFit athletes deserve to hear the truth about the safety of CrossFit.

False Information

Just last year, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) was ordered to pay CrossFit for damages to its reputation caused by a false study they released. The study claimed to be scientific, yet it knowingly exaggerated the injury rates of CrossFit athletes. As ruled by the court, this so-called study was deemed to be completely fabricated in a purposeful attempt to harm CrossFit. You can read more about the case in this article by CrossFit.

To further aggravate the matter, The Montreal Gazette published an article stating that CrossFit "aggressively pursued" studies indicating higher rates of injuries among its athletes. The article completely ignored the fact that the court ruled in CrossFit's favor, therefore portraying CrossFit inaccurately and contributing to the insidious rumors. You can read CrossFit's original response to the article here.

Common Sense

The reality is that CrossFit is no more dangerous than any other form of intense physical activity. You can get hurt doing anything if you don't use common sense. Like every training program, you must respect your own limitations and build strength and endurance before moving on to more difficult challenges. If you respect your body and focus on proper training techniques, your risk of injury reduces dramatically. An article by Movement Fix describes what makes CrossFit great, and it explains how CrossFit has actually caused pain and injuries to go away for some people by staying active.

Our Safety Procedures

At CrossFit Fortify, we value safety and make it a priority. We train members on using the proper form when performing exercises. Additionally, all new members must go through a mandatory CrossFit 101 training we provide in order to become familiar with all the movements involved.

False information intentionally created to undermine CrossFit and produce the stigma that it is dangerous has misguided many people to believe that it is an unsafe practice. This could not be further from the truth. CrossFit is an incredible training program that will train your body in ways you never dreamed possible. If you are hoping to get into the best shape of your life, CrossFit is going to be the thing that gets you there.
